Each square is a quarter of a degree on a side, 17 miles from top to bottom, and is shaded by the number of mapped cameras inside it. A square is drawn for Connecticut when the nearest place with a mapped camera is in Connecticut, so the squares along the state line are approximate, and one that straddles the line counts the cameras on both sides.

Places in Connecticut with a page
So far, 2 places in Connecticut have their own page. The list runs from the shortest typical distance to the longest: the distance from a typical point inside the place to the nearest mapped camera. The share is the part of the area inside the place’s boundary that lies within half a mile of one.
Measured places without a page
At least 10 cameras are mapped in each of the 13 places below, enough for them to be measured the same way, but none has a page of its own. Pages are added in stages, starting where a mapped camera is typically closest. When a place gets a page of its own is set out with the list of states.
Each line gives the typical distance to the nearest mapped camera, the share of the area inside the boundary that lies within half a mile of one, and the mapped cameras inside it. The order is the same: shortest typical distance first.

Who is recorded as running them
In Connecticut, 600 of 1,022 mapped cameras carry an operator tag, which is 59% of the cameras here.
- Public agency541 cameras
- Private45 cameras
- Camera company0 cameras
- Other14 cameras
- Not recorded422 cameras
The kinds are read from the operator names mappers typed. A name is counted as private only when it plainly belongs to a business, an association or another private owner; a name the rules cannot place is counted as other; and where no operator is recorded the camera is not assumed to be anybody’s. The method page sets out how a name is sorted into a kind.
How these figures are worked out
Every camera here is a pin a volunteer added to OpenStreetMap, so each count is a floor. A place is its U.S. Census Bureau boundary, and a camera belongs to it when its pin falls inside. For each measured place, a grid of sample points is laid inside the boundary, and the typical distance is the median straight-line distance from those points to the nearest mapped camera of any make.
